Ukrainian mother-of-12, Olga Semidyanova, has been hailed as a ‘hero’ after she was killed while fighting against Russian forces in Ukraine. A spokesperson for the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense said that she had volunteered to join the military to fight against the Russian occupation of her country. She is just one of many mothers who have been risking their lives to protect their families. Her death has inspired others to join the fight, and her story has become an inspiration to people all around the world. Olga Semidyanova might have died fighting Russian troops in her native east Ukraine, but her death could well be the ultimate symbol of the divided nation’s descent into chaos.

The 37-year-old was a mother of 12 and a trained cosmetologist who took up arms after rebel fighters seized Slovyansk, the city where she lived with her family. She was a mother who, like many other women in Donbas, decided that she could not just stand by and watch Russian troops take over her city. The only place that could offer her some protection in the dark was the basement of a local administrative building. She stayed there while her husband took care of their children and 12-year-old son. Olga Semidyanova was a brave woman who lived in the small, Ukrainian village of Nova Kakhovka.

When Russian troops invaded the village under the guise of “protecting” them from a rebellion, Olga decided that she couldn’t just stand by and watch her home be destroyed. She decided to take the fight to them…Discussing the issue of people being unjustifiably labeled as heroes, I think Semidyanova (and countless others like her) should be called a hero. Semidyanova’s life mattered (and still does) and she deserves to be remembered and honored as such, irrespective of her background or home nation – because if you’re standing in your native land fighting invaders, you’re a warrior hero plain and simple.
